The methods

Every method proposes a different road network for the same blocks; all are graded on the same basis — permeability (the benefit) against displacement (the cost). Each page shows the method's roads on the ground and its numbers from the actual runs.

permeability against displacement for every method on block ZAF.9.3.1_1_5810
Permeability against displacement on block ZAF.9.3.1_1_5810, every method overlaid. The two dashed guides are the calibrated standards every method here is graded against — 10% displacement and 60% permeability. Drag either guide, or use the sliders, to ask which methods clear it and at what least road.
  • Peel

Steepest descent down the access-depth peel — the access-optimal baseline.

    baseline

  • Least-Cost Tree

Least-cost paths that repel from homes.

    evaluated

  • Looped Tree

Clearance + loop-closing connectors for redundancy.

    evaluated

  • Throughways

Best straight arterial per metre, snapped to buildable frontage.

not in the current benchmark lineup — it costs ~80x the wall-clock of every other method (37.6 s/block against 0.01-0.47 s) while trailing both lenses, so it was dropped from the examples; it remains a registered, tested method

  • Loop Network

The cycle, not the spur — bridgeless by construction.

    evaluated

  • Loop Network (desire-routed)

The Loop Network, its loops bent toward where people would walk.

    evaluated

  • Topology

Least new road to give every parcel frontage — the prior art this project is measured against.

    evaluated

  • Direct Objective (LP)

The whole road set solved at once by a linear program, budgeted in displacement.

    evaluated

  • Frontage (street-priced)

Straight arterials chosen to cut the deepest access, priced in homes displaced.

    evaluated

  • OSM Footpaths

The real as-built footpath network — the baseline to beat.

    evaluated

  • Grid

    A density-adaptive Manhattan-style grid.
